Question: Is this 99 escort worth keeping

car only has 50k miles on it and is costing 1500 to fix a cylinder. Is this common for escorts?

Since it is probably only worth 5-6k (probably 5 given the cylinder repair cost), I would say it is not worth it.

It depends, I have a 98 escort and it has barely needed any work for the last 80,000 miles (165,000 currently) until recently when it was inspected it took some parts for brakes and suspension. This has been incredibly cheap to run and good gas mileage as well.

You may be able to put in a lower milage engine for less than that.

I bought a 1999 Ford Escort Wagon new. I have serviced it consistently and it has serviced me well in return for the past 11 years! Other than normal service, brakes, tires, etc., never had ANYTHING to repair until now at 101K with oil leak in crankshaft area. Other than that no complaints and current value at about $3K.
