Overhead Cam

A camshaft "over the head" rather than below the cylinders in the engine block, and generally considered a more modern engine design. Overhead cams eliminate the need for pushrods to open and close the valves. If you ever see letters such a "DOHC" on an engine, this means Dual Over Head Cam," as in two cams in the cylinder head.
